The issue of connecting our city's neighborhoods has been a hot topic lately, and this holiday weekend, Dallas is getting a little international help to unite our divided metropolis. "Ciclovia" is the Portuguese word for "bike path," and what began as a small pro-cyclist event in late 70s-Bogota has grown into a global movement.
The process involves shutting off major intersections and streets to cars and motorized vehicles, which encourages walking, biking, and other beneficial physical activity. As the ceremony grew, city officials began to position the ciclovia between once disparate neighborhoods, thus highlighting their long-forgotten interconnectivity. That may sound like quite a task, but luckily we have it easy here: Just shut down a section of Cedar Springs, and all of a sudden you have a clear path from Klyde Warren to the Katy Trail, Downtown to Uptown. Bring the pets and kids; it's never been safer to cross the street.
