For all the expressive inventiveness inherent in the charmingly scruffy world of indie rock, it often lacks in the style department. Though that may be part of its stubborn appeal, that doesn’t mean that the subculture system is immune to being taken for a fancily-dressed ride every now and then. Enter Twin Shadow, aka George Lewis Jr., the dapper yet mysterious young man who crooned his way out of the dry ice smoke of a new wave video. He has a carefully calculated brood reminiscent of Morrissey or James Dean, especially if Dean had been born in the Dominican Republic rather than Indiana. But Twin Shadow lives up to the hype, since his synthesizer-heavy, pop-saturated odes are as forlorn as they are rhythmic, paying melodramatic tribute to love, sex, and dance. Elliphant supports.
