Playwright Theresa Rebeck's acerbic comedy blasts the stereotypes of pseudo-intellectual literary snobs with her trademark blend of razor-sharp dialogue and punchy characters. Leonard, a famous yet aging novelist, has charged four young aspirants $5,000 each for a ten-week fiction workshop. These tortured writer types—two men, two women—quickly get sidetracked, however, by romantic intrigue and competition for Leonard's approval. Here's the niggle: much of Seminar's delight in its Broadway debut came from the depth the actor Alan Rickman (that voice!) brought to the role of Leonard, a womanizing lout who delights in pitting his charges against each other and reveling in his superiority. We're interested to see how the role is reimagined here.
