Our first introduction to the cities of Europe came from watching travel guru Rick Steves traipse from country to country on PBS. He's kindly, bespectacled, and he knows all the best places to go. He's also spent four months out of every year for the past 30 years—a third of his adult life—living out of a suitcase. He's picked up a thing or two along the way. His original talk, part of an independently organized TED conference in 2011, reflects on the value of what he calls "thoughtful" travel, a pursuit that offers opportunities for cultural enrichment, personal connection, and political and social awareness.
