Even famous Russian romantic composers get writer's block. After the poor reception of his first symphonic effort, Sergei Rachmaninoff fell into a depression that left him uninspired for years. He emerged on the other side with his Piano Concerto No. 2, a sweeping work that cemented the trueness of his talent. Fans of David Lean's Brief Encounter, the beautifully restrained story of a sudden, passionate love affair between two ostensibly ordinary, sensibly married people, will recognize this as the heartpounding score that swelled over Laura and Alec's stolen moments of happiness. Dallas Symphony Orchestra maestro Jaap van Zweden conducts, while 23-year-old pianist Anna Fedorova performs the concerto. The program also includes Dmitri Shostakovich's Five Fragments and Aaron Copland's Symphony No. 3.
