This singer-songwriters’ music has been a staple of TV soundtracks since she appeared on the scene in the early 2000s, usually to set the mood for some sort of heartbreak. Her husky vocals are perfect for conveying that particular pain, which is probably why one of our college roommates spent a week holed up her room playing “I Want You” on repeat after getting dumped. Sad. But for all her mournful music, Yamagata shouldn't have too many complaints about her success. Sanders Bohlke supports.
