Houston rapper Paul Wall started his career entrenched in the tough-yet-rich street culture for which the city is known. He popped up on mixtapes rappers from the area would sell out of car trunks before achieving mainstream success. Wall himself reached such highs after scoring a hit with The People’s Champ in 2005 which featured Kanye West. Since then, Wall has added a slew of similarly decorated collaborators to his resume, but he isn’t content to simply pal around with other famous artists. At the end of last year, he put out a record entitled Check Season, which avoided the formulaic trappings of most radio rap. He also scaled back the profile of his entourage, by instead working with artists known mostly around his beloved Texas hometown.
