Czech composer Antonin Dvorák wrote his ninth symphony, nicknamed the New World, during the years he spent in New York as the director of the National Conservatory of Music in America. In this time, Dvorák discovered black spirituals and Indian melodies to weave into his native country’s musical tradition, producing an ode to the land of opportunity that is at once full of promise and tinged with a longing for home. Guest pianist Hélène Grimaud rounds out the program with her interpretation of Brahams’ Piano Concerto No. 2.
