Born in a boxcar, Haggard was an inmate at San Quentin Prison when Johnny Cash played his famous concert there in 1958. His subsequent country music career is marked by the experiences of his hard-worn life. His songs are rough, plain-spoken affairs about love, family, drinking, outlaws, outcasts, and hard-working sorts, simple yarns that ensnare the complexities of the human condition. His rowdy anthems can insight a bar room riot; his sweet crooning can make the most hard-hearted good ol’ boy weak in the knees.
