If there’s one thing we remember about Boogie Nights, Paul Thomas Anderson’s movie about the adult film industry, it’s the image of Heather Graham on those roller skates. Her audition scene in the 1997 film breathed new life into the folksy singer-songwriter Melanie’s `70s hit, “Brand New Key,” a loopy diddy about a girl trying to impress an uninterested boy with her new pair of skates. (Spoiler alert: not everyone believes she’s actually singing about boots with wheels.) We really love that song. It’s even become our go-to karaoke number. And yet, we’d still prefer to hear it sung by Melanie herself, live and in person.
