About
Victor Hugo’s novel spawned what is arguably one of the most popular musicals of all time, and one of the better productions our high school ever put on. There’s a lot of plot, but the main story follows convict Jean Valjean, arrested for stealing a loaf of bread and sentenced to 19 years in prison. He’s pretty bitter about it, so much so that after he’s finally released, he steals silver candlesticks from the friendly bishop who takes him in and snatches pocket change from a young chimney sweep. But when the bishop shows him unexpected mercy, he’s inspired to become an honest man and help others. Ultimately, however, Valjean finds that he cannot escape his dark past. Our favorite songs? “Master of the House” and “On My Own,” of course. We laugh, we cry.
