Shady Nathan Detroit has an illegal craps game to put on, but he needs to find the cash to rent a suitable venue. Desperate for money, Nathan bets Sky Masterson $1,000 that he can't convince Sarah Brown, a wholesome woman who runs a mission, to fly to Havana with him. Much to Nathan's chagrin, Sky pulls off the unlikely feat, but the bet proves to be more than Sky bargained for.
