If our life was a movie, we’d shoot at least one gorgeous summer night scene and soundtrack it to Buena Vista Social Club’s “Chan Chan.” It’s a song that evokes the heat of the tropics, an impromptu dance in a cafe, a walk on a dimly lit street. (Look, it’s our movie. Creative liberties are a given.) Buena Vista Social Club was originally a members-only joint in Havana, Cuba, and more than 50 years after the club’s closing, traditional Cuban musicians and an American guitarist got together to make an album inspired by life in pre-Revolutionary Cuba. This was 1997. Buena Vista Social Club is the group’s only recording, aside from live versions of the songs. Seeing the band perform at the Bass Hall is probably the closest to Cuba that most of us are going to get—and better yet, it’s like stepping into a time machine.
