Dallas Symphony Orchestra maestro Jaap van Zweden performs Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 4, the composer's final symphonic work. We like Brahms because from what we can tell, works of musical genius didn't just appear to him. He worked hard, dedicated himself to his craft, and didn't put anything down that wasn't worked through. He was a perfectionist, and admired Beethoven to a fault. Brahms' Fourth Symphony is a triumph because it represents the composer's hard-won creative independence, stepping out of the lingering shadow of the greats that came before him to cement his own, deeply personal style. The evening also includes Britten's Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Mahler's "The Youth's Magic Horn" with soloist Matthias Goerne.
