Even if you swear you haven't, you've heard composer Maurice Ravel's most famous work. It's a slow-building piece that starts with the march of a snare, then a lilting, whimsical flute, incorporating musical elements in an additive, addicting way. Of course, it's inspired by the Spanish dance of the same name, and shares the slow-quick-quick rhythmic sensibility. The evening begins, however, with Gabriel Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande, a tragic suite that traces the path of doomed lovers, and continues with guest pianist Louis Lortie's interpretation of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21, Elvira Madigan. Before finishing with Boléro, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra will also play Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2.
