About
Here's a tidbit of 1950s Dallas history for you. William Maxine Starks, one of the city's first black police officers, wasn't allowed to arrest white suspects. He had to call dispatch and request a white officer to come and do the cuffing. Fast-forward 58 years, and Starks' son, the architectural theorist/designer Darell W. Fields, has put together Black Architecture Project as a way to highlight the idea that blackness isn't simply a racial or social distinction but also a source of creativity and invention. Fields will host discussions in conjunction with the project on Feb. 16 (at Cunningham Architects) and Feb. 22 (at the South Dallas Cultural Center).
