The city's essential experiences. You're not a true local until you've done them all.
Eat chicken-fried steak at Babe's in Roanoke
When Paul and Mary Beth “Babe” Vinyard opened the first Babe’s in Roanoke in 1993, they had no idea their little restaurant devoted to fried food would become a local phenomenon. The Vinyards now have nine locations in the area. The fried chicken is great—it’s Mary’s recipe—but we love sitting at a communal table at the original location in an old warehouse and blowing our diet on a full plate of crispy chicken-fried steak, bowls of mashed potatoes, and the lightest biscuits in town. Oh, and Grandma’s corn. We always remember to eat our vegetables.  Photography by Kevin Marple
